Double elimination
In double elimination, every player has a losers' bracket — you need to lose twice to be out. Fairer, and noticeably heavier to run.
How it works
Everyone starts in the winners' bracket. A loss drops you into the losers' bracket instead of eliminating you outright. A second loss, and it's over. The final can even pit an already-beaten finalist against an undefeated player.
The price you pay
It rewards consistency over a single bad match — but it nearly doubles the number of matches and the work of tracking the bracket. Exactly the kind of thing that becomes unmanageable on paper fast.
Leaguer's practical compromise
Instead of a full double-elimination bracket, Leaguer first plays a pool stage — everyone gets several guaranteed matches — followed by a single-elimination final. The same second chance, without the double-bracket complexity.
